The Drum Cafe Story
(From a Drumming Club to Corporate Drumming)
Drum Cafe was founded in 1998 by Warren Lieberman, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
It began as a drumming workshops coffee shop where people would come and drum along with the performers. Brett Schlesinger partnered up with Warren and opened the famous Drum Cafe Club in Cape town which soon became an essential part of the tourist route to South Africa.
After being approached by companies to create drumming sessions (drumming workshop for corporate drummin) for them at their offices, Drum Cafe quickly adapted to create a business product. After doing these drum sessions all over South Africa for the corporate world, Brett decided to move to the UK to expand the brand into Europe.
Very soon we had incredible people join us and before long had branches in Germany, New York, Atlanta, Vancouver, San Antonio and San Diego. Over the next few years, this expanded to 17 Branches worldwide all offering our unique type of African drum workshops.
Some of the best drummers, dancers and performers in the World joined the teams and Drum Cafe developed its range of skills to include large events, breaking the world record with 6000 drums all played simultaneously. As we opened branches and our range of products, we became a big part of the events world.
After doing an Opening Ceremony for both the Olympic Games, Football World Cup and Live Earth in London and Johannesburg, Drum Cafe has become a household name in the meeting and events industry.
We have delivered 48,000 events in 59 Countries for over 230 of the worlds top 400 Companies. Over two million people have drummed with us.
Drum Cafe now offers a huge range of products for virtually every type of event. Our most recent development is the creation of a training programme that uses both the interactive music as well as our huge experience in delivering events to teach about specific concepts in business. These workshops draw powerful analogies between a group of musicians and a business team, between communities and companies, between an orchestra and a large corporation.
Our vision remains the same as in the old days of the Drum Cafe club in Cape Town… to use the power of music to unite, uplift and inspire our audience whether it be for a celebration, a serious business meeting or an annual conference.
The Drum Circle
Drum Cafe began with the world of Drum Circles, drum jams and drum sessions. The difference between our interactive corporate events and normal drum sessions are that our events are facilitated without excessive verbal instruction or focus on learning drums.
Team drum sessions are equally geared towards the experience and the understanding. Drum workshops are either to learn drums or to build teams…ours are a mixture.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Why choose drumming for your company?
Drumming doesn’t need to interrupt your work day too much – it takes only an hour. The positive effects are immediate and long-lasting. We can come to you in the morning at 8 am and be out of there by 9 am! We guarantee an invigorating start to the day. Or, finish your day slightly early, and an hour later, your group will have bonded and will emerge on a high! Our events are built on entertainment, team training and physical and mental shifts and the combination of those depend on your event …
How long is an event?
Events are between 20 and 60 minutes, our breakout events are up to 3 hours.
Do we need a venue?
We can work in any venue including hotels, conference venues or meeting rooms. For large events, we often work in theatres and exhibition halls.
What AV and lighting do you need?
For smaller groups, we need no lighting or AV, but from 50 pax up, we require one microphone per facilitator. Extra lighting is always a bonus but not a necessity.
How many in your team?
We have three drummers up to about 150 delegates, and then four or more depending on the size. We have done shows with a cast of 20 when required.
What does it cost?
The show cost depends on the number of delegates, the city, and the date and time. If you send us an email, we will prepare you a proposal.
Is it very loud?
The shows are around 85 decibels, which is not loud at all. Most of the volume comes from our performers and we can control our own volume. In ten years, we have had only one or two noise complaints, and this is always related to the situations where our room adjoins another room with a partition.
Can we do it during dinner?
Definitely, we often work after the main course, around tables of ten. Its great too to start off the evening.
Can you work in multiple languages?
Yes, we have facilitators in many languages, but are also able to do an entire event without saying a word… non-verbal instruction creates a great atmosphere and works very well for events where there are multiple languages represented in the audience.
Can you do black tie events?
Yes, we often work in very formal events. Our event is dignified and high energy at the same time.
How do we get drums onto seats?
We generally like the event to be a surprise, so we either load the room before delegates arrive, or immediately when our event starts… for an event of 200 pax, we can load the room in about 15 minutes.
How big are the drums?
They are Djembe drums, about as long as from your elbow to your fingertips… and are played sitting down with the drum in your lap … It’s very comfortable and natural to play the drum like this.
